Computers in the Workplace

Computers have a place in education’s business and technical aspects, like entering records for grades and attendance, payroll, and budget management. As time goes on, computers have also increased their purpose in the direct education of students. With the touch screen displays and student laptops that now replace the role of VHS televisions, textbooks, and whiteboards, students have become more interactive with the learning process. Also, there has been an increased usage of social media in districts, with computers allowing parents a direct line to all the information they need to be a part of the education industry.

The increased number of computers and other technology at home and the almost universal internet usage have produced a more tech-savvy student body. Teachers, administration, and other employees must be able to keep up with the needs of these students. A local district in my area has incorporated touch screen tables that five-year-old students use to play interactive educational games. At the same time, several teachers have damaged the same technology due to not being informed about how to use them.

The blend of hardware, operating systems, and networking allows technology like Augmented Reality to exist. The technology is still new, and classrooms have not incorporated it on a wide scale. In Poh’s 2020 article, ‘8 Technologies That Will Shape Future Classrooms’, when reporting on the current level of technology, he states,

“Apps like Sky Map lets you scout the night sky for constellations, but they are not fully integrated as a component of education as they have yet to reach the stage of seamlessness. The AR experience must be immersive enough to blend information readily with the reality” (Poh, para. 4).

However, as technology advances in the next decade, students could experience the process of dissecting an animal, traveling across the world or even flying into a black hole all through Augmented Reality.
